TOKYO, Feb 2, 2020, Kyodo. Suntory Spirits Ltd. will sell 100 bottles of long-aged single malt whisky that has been maturing since at least 1964 for 3 million yen ($27,500) each. The 700-milliliter bottles of 55-year-old Yamazaki will be the most expensive offering in the beverage company’s product lineup. Prospective buyers will be able to apply online from Wednesday to Feb. 14, with bottles shipped to people randomly selected from June 30, Kyodo News reported.

The product is a mixture of multiple types of unblended whisky stored at Suntory’s Yamazaki distillery in Osaka Prefecture for over 55 years, the longest among all whiskies sold by the company.

The flagship whisky has a deep amber color, with a rich fruity aroma and multilayered flavors. The bottles will be packaged in a lacquered box.

The Suntory release comes at a time when constant shortages of unblended whisky are being experienced due to rising demand for the Japanese products. The outcome is that long-aged products are now increasingly highly-valued due to their rarity.

Suntory has sold 50-year-old Yamazaki, another vintage brand, in limited quantities on three occasions from 2005 to 2011 for 1 million yen per bottle.
