$100M to modernise Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh

PHNOM PENH, Dec 9, 2019, The Khmer Times. Prime Minister Hun Sen on Friday revealed the government and charity organisations have donated more than $100 million to modernise Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh, The Khmer Times reported.
He said on Facebook charity organisations have donated about $80 million, while the government donated about $30 million.
“This budget will make it possible for us to make the Calmette Hospital into a polytechnic centre for medical examinations,” Mr Hun Sen said, noting the government will disburse $30 million for the construction of a 12-storey hospital building.
Chheang Ra, head of Calmette, yesterday said modernising the hospital is an important step in improving medical services.
“The funds provided by the charities and the government are important in the modernisation of the hospital because it wants to serve and cure people effectively,” Mr Ra said. “We welcome more funds to be donated to help the hospital.”
Mr Hun Sen’s mother-in-law remains in the hospital after she fell ill last month.
Mr Hun Sen and his wife Bun Rany have donated gifts to 1,123 patients and 1,617 staffers while visiting her mother in the hospital.
The Cambodian Red Cross in a statement said Ms Rany has thanked doctors and hospital staffers for upholding professionalism and promoting the Kingdom’s health sector.
