PHNOM PENH, Aug 19, 2020, The Khmer Times. The Tourism Ministry said today that more than 200,000 tourists visited provinces on Monday, the first day of the replacement Khmer New Year holiday, The Khmer Times reported.

In a statement, the ministry said it recorded a total of 230,000 visitors, most of whom had flocked to Kampot and Siem Reap provinces.

It noted that the public has a better understanding of COVID-19 prevention measures put in place by the Health Ministry and its own guidelines for those visiting tourism destinations.

The ministry said the influx of local and foreign visitors to tourist spots, especially in Siem Reap province, had provided job opportunities for tour guides.

It added that social distancing, however, had not been fully followed by large groups of visitors and some resorts had become overcrowded as a result of the influx of tourists.

The ministry said resort managers and officials at tourist sites were doing their best to implement social distancing measures, such as halving the usual number of people in tour groups to popular destinations.
