July 12 deadline for Grab users in Malaysia to take selfie to register

PETALING JAYA, Jun 7, 2019, FMT. All Grab users in Malaysia will have to do a one-time selfie verification to use the app from July 12. In an announcement on Monday, it said this was part of e-hailing regulations set by the government for all e-hailing users, reported the Free Malaysia Today.
“As always, we are committed to keeping your personal information safe. Your selfie will not be shared with our drivers,” it said.
Precautions will be taken to ensure the person is not holding a photo in front of the camera to “cheat” the system.
Past news reports had indicated that this selfie rule had been implemented for all new Grab users since March this year.
This selfie facial recognition system is believed to have helped police track down two suspects believed involved in the robbery-cum-murder of a Grab driver, Mohd Hanafiee Jaffar, 27, in Tuaran, Sabah, on May 24.
The driver had picked up the ride about 4am. His body was found dumped in some bushes two days later. He had been stabbed in the chest multiple times.
The Straits Times reported that within Singapore, Grab users who signed up before February this year did not have to go through the selfie facial recognition verification, with their identities verified by either their Facebook account or credit card details.
But new users signing up from February this year have had to submit selfies to successfully open their accounts.
