Myanmar’s Mandalay Region to ready towns for migrant influx

MANDALAY CITY, Feb 6, 2020, Myanmar Times. Mandalay Region is developing urban plans in all 28 townships amid an increase of migrants to towns and cities, a senior regional minister said. Mandalay, with an estimated six million people, is the second most populous region in the country. Its capital, Mandalay city, is the second largest in Myanmar after Yangon, Myanmar Times reported.
U Ye Lwin, regional minister, said the city and 11 other townships already have urban plans.
“The plans will include a development strategy, estimate of infrastructure needs, and work priorities,” he told the regional parliament.
Pyin Oo Lwin, Mogok, Kyaukse, Yamethin, Meikhitla and Wundwin townships already have urban plans, he added.
U Aung Kyaw Moe, a regional MP, underscored the importance of urban planning, as many towns in the region are experiencing an influx of migrants from rural areas.
“More and more families and young people from rural areas across the country are migrating to urban areas, where they can find more job opportunities,” he said. As a result, local governments are having problems with squatters.”
With the increasing number of migrants, factories and small businesses will have to expand,” he said. “Systematic land use, water supply, roads, electricity, drainage, garbage collection, and town planning will be necessary.”
