Rescue operation ends with 36 deaths in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Jan 5, 2020, The Khmer Times. The death toll in the collapse of the seven-storey building under construction in Kep province’s Kep city total has risen to 36 as rescue operation came to an end today, The Khmer Times reported.

Kun Kim, first vice president of the National Committee for Disaster Management, said that rescue workers retrieved 36 bodies from the debris since Friday afternoon till today while 23 injured workers were rescued.

According to Kep provincial authority’s report, Out of the 36 dead, 14 of whom were women and 6 were children.

The building under construction collapsed on Friday afternoon, while officials blamed inferior construction materials for the collapse.

The owners of the building, a husband and wife were arrested for questioning yesterday.
