Amid raging protest, PM Modi says farm laws broke shackles of farmers, brought new opportunities

NEW DELHI, Nov 29, 2020, India Today. As the farmers from Punjab and other states continued to protest at Delhi border areas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the new farm laws broke the shackles of the farmers and gave them new rights and opportunities. PM Narendra Modi also said the central government is committed to the welfare of the farmers, India Today reported.

Addressing the nation through his monthly Mann ki Baat radio programme, PM Narendra Modi said, “Parliament has recently passed farm reform laws after rigorous brainstorming. These reforms have not only broken the shackles of farmers but have also given new rights and opportunities to them.

“Agricultural reforms in the past few days have opened new doors of possibilities for our farmers,” PM Narendra Modi said, adding that under these reforms, the SDM of the areas will have to settle the complaints of the farmers within a month.

PM Narendra Modi said, “There is another big thing in the law. Under these laws, the farmers will have their complaints resolved within a month. The SDM of the area will have to settle the complaint of a farmer within one month under these laws.”

PM Narendra Modi’s statements have come amid the raging farmers’ protest within and at the borders of Delhi against farm laws. After a chaotic Friday that saw police using teargas shells, water cannons and multi-layer barriers to block the protesters and some farmers pelting stones and breaking barricades in their determination to push through as part of their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, Saturday was quiet.
