NEW DELHI, Jan 12, 2020, India Today. PM Narendra Modi on Sunday celebrated the 150th anniversary of the historic Kolkata Port Trust and renamed the port after Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. PM Modi announced at an event at the Netaji Indoor Stadium on Sunday, “This port will now be known by the name of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee,” India Today reported.

“It was unfortunate for the country that after Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Babasaheb Ambedkar resigned from the government, their suggestions were not implemented as they should have been,” said PM Modi.

“I announce the renaming of the Kolkata Port Trust to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port. He is a living legend who was a leader for development and fought on the forefront for the idea of One Nation, One Constitution,” the Prime Minister announced.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee had founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 which later went on to become today’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“Country’s coasts are gateways to development, our government has started the Sagarmala programme to improve connectivity,” said PM Modi.

He added, “Development of waterways has improved Kolkata Port Trust’s connectivity with industrial centres in east India, made trade easier for our neighbouring countries.”
