Work to start on Pacific undersea internet cable

WASHINGTON D.C., Apr 10, 2019, RNZ. Work is set to start on an undersea internet cable which will connect Fiji, Kiribati and Tokelau, reported the Radio New Zealand.

Southern Cross Cable said on Tuesday it had inked a deal with Alcatel Submarine Networks for the submarine cable project NEXT.

The $US350 million cable will link the US with New Zealand and Australia, while connecting Fiji, Kiribati and Tokelau.

Southern Cross said it would also provide opportunities for other Pacific islands with existing undesea internet cables to link up.

The project is due to be completed in the second half of 2021.
