Over 1,000 forced from homes in floods nationwide in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26, 2019, NST. The number of people forced to evacuate their homes due to flooding continues to climb nationwide. In Negeri Sembilan, 166 flood victims from 49 families are currently taking shelter at five temporary relief centres (PPS) as of 8am today, Bernama reported. This is a slight increase from 162 evacuees last night, reported the New Straits Times.

The victims are from inundated areas of Kampung Telekong, Kampung Chennah, Kampung Juntai, Kampung Simpang Durian and Kampung Jerang, said the Jelebu Disaster Management Committee Secretariat.

The PPS are the Kampung Poum Mosque, the Kampung Chennah community hall, the Kampung Juntai community hall, the Simpang Durian multi-purpose hall and the Kampung Jerang Mosque.

In SELANGOR, the number of flood victims evacuated to various PPS in Kuala Selangor has more than doubled to 293.

Up to 91 people are currently taking shelter at the Desa Coalfields MDKS community hall, while 164 victims are being housed at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Parit Mahang.

In addition, 38 evacuees are staying at SK Jaya Setia, said a Smart Selangor Command Center (SSCC) spokesman.

Meanwhile, continuous heavy rain since Friday afternoon has caused the Sungai Buloh river to burst its banks, said Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis.

In PENANG, 124 people were evacuated from their homes to three PPS in Seberang Perai Tengah.

A total of 83 flood victims from 23 families are currently taking shelter at the Tok Suboh PPR community hall; while 15 people are being housed at the Bukit Teh community hall.

Twenty-six people from seven families have been staying at the Kampung Manggis Kemas kindergarten since Tuesday, said State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh.

In JOHOR, 55 flood victims from 13 families have been taking shelter at two PPS in Batu Pahat since Friday.

The flood victims comprise residents of Kampung Sungai Kajang in Bagan, and areas around the Batu Pahat Farmers Complex in Tongkang Pechah.

Sixteen victims are being housed at Sekolah Kebangsan (SK) Sungai Kajang; and 39 others are at SK Seri Binjai, said State Local Government, Urban Wellbeing and Environment Committee chairman Tan Chen Choon.

In PERAK, the number of people evacuated from their homes in Kerian rose to 112 today.

The victims, from 26 families, are currently taking shelter at Sekolah Kebangsaan Changkat Lobak.

Meanwhile, a major landslide in Ijok, near Bukat Kurau, Selama, which killed one person, forced the evacuation of a number of residents from Kampung Teras.

The victims are being housed at the Kampung Teras community hall.
