Thai AIS commits to adopt 5G

BANGKOK, Oct 4, 2019, Bangkok Post. Advanced Info Service (AIS) has committed to injecting more money into its 5G infrastructure, after investing 1 trillion baht over the past 29 years into its mobile network and operations, reported the Bangkok Post.

“The company is committed to providing 5G service to benefit all Thais and serve their digital lifestyles,” said AIS chief Somchai Lertsutiwong at an event to mark AIS’ 30-year anniversary on Thursday.

The government is gearing up for 5G adoption next year, aiming to draw investment as some countries in Asean expressed determination to roll out the service next year.

AIS has invested more than 1 trillion baht in the country’s telecom sector, he said.

The sum includes 468 billion baht on networks, 161 billion in spectrum, 258 billion in revenue-sharing and 166 billion in taxes.

AIS plans to provide gift points to its 42 million customers to celebrate 30 years of operation that can be redeemed at designated shops for discounted prices.

The company takes pride in driving the national telecom industry and giving Thais a better quality of life, said Mr Somchai.

AIS owes its position as market leader to a dedication to innovation, he said.

“From analogue to digital, 5G is just around the corner. AIS always thinks in advance to stay ahead of the competition,” he said.

“We continue to play an important role in Thailand’s economy and compete in the global market.”

The 42 million customers of AIS mobile and AIS Fibre will receive a special gift from the AIS Point scheme in collaboration with AIS partners from various industries.

The longer customers have been with AIS, the more points they receive: 30 points for customers of less than 10 years, 60 points for customers of more than 10 years, and 90 points for customers that have been with AIS for more than 20 years.

Usually customers get one AIS point for each 25 baht spent, redeemable for discounts and privileges. AIS customers already enrolled in the AIS Point programme will receive complimentary points automatically.

Mr Somchai said customers would be entitled to discounts and privileges at a variety of shops throughout Thailand.

Customers can redeem AIS points at popular venues, including restaurants and dessert shops, or get vouchers or coupons for discounts on AIS products and services.

Customers will have a chance to win gold worth 657,000 baht and 30 Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus smartphones will also be awarded, worth a total of 1,137,000 baht.

Mr Somchai said AIS believes that as a corporation, it has a responsibility to restore and protect the world, and is initiating an environmental protection programme called e-waste project.

The mobile operator said anyone who wants to discard earphones, AC adaptors, Bluetooth, power banks, or used mobile phones can drop them in e-waste bins located at AIS shops and in malls managed by Central Group.

All e-waste items will be properly disposed of using the zero landfill process (waste disposal that recycles usable parts).

AIS will distribute e-waste bins to universities across Thailand.

From Oct 1, AIS e-waste bins will be available at 81 locations, including AIS shops in Bangkok, surrounding areas and major cities as well as Central shopping malls.
