El Niño agri damage tops P2.67 billion in Philippines

MANILA, Mar 27, 2019, PhilStar. Agricultural damage caused by the weak El Niño has reached P2.67 billion, data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council showed Wednesday, reported the Philippine Star.

Some 103,247 hectares of land were affected by the drought and dry spell in Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Soccsksargen and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Minadanao, with 79,044 farmers reporting losses.

The estimated amount of agricultural damage per region is as follows:

Calabarzon – P12,787,667.36
Mimaropa – P192,509,850.00
Bicol – P793,973,458.81
Western Visayas – P76,398,989.16
Eastern Visayas – P387,294,091.52
Soccsargen – P808,666,138.43
BARMM – P403,373,404.00

In North Cotabato, around 71,909 families or 359,545 individuals were affected by the phenomenon.

State weather bureau PAGASA last week officially declared the end of northeast season (amihan) and the start of the dry season.

PAGASA said the ongoing weak El Niño may result in prolonged dry spell and hotter air temperatures in the coming months.

El Niño is expected to last until June.
