NAYPYITAW, Mar 25, 2019, Myanmar Times. Leaders of 32 opposition parties, including the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), met with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, commander-in-chief of Defence Services, in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday, reported the Myanmar Times.

The meeting was not for political purposes, but to discuss national matters, such as constitutional amendments, peace and the economy, said Snr Gen Min Aung Hlaing.

The politicians also wanted to meet with the president and chair of the Union Election Commission, but were unable to, said Daw Sanda Oo, chair of the Peace and Diversity Party.

“It is difficult to meet with the nation’s leaders as they are usually busy,” said U Myo Nyunt, NLD spokesperson.

The meeting between the Tatmadaw (military) leader and political parties happened because of the NLD’s attempt to amend the constitution, he said.

“The involvement of the military in politics is inappropriate,” said U Myo Nyunt.

Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services (Army) Vice-Senior General Soe Win and other military officers were also at the meeting.

The country needs political tranquillity and peace for security and economic development, and the parties need to cooperate with the Tatmadaw to guarantee that peace and tranquillity. If there is no armed conflict, the country can be developed, Snr Gen Min Aung Hlaing said.
