HONIARA, Sep 14, 2019, RNZ. The US Ambassador to Solomon Islands has warned the country would face challenges if it severs ties with Taiwan in favour of China. Catherine Ebert-Gray says she voiced support for maintaining relations with Taipei to Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare on Tuesday, reported the Radio New Zealand.

Three different government agencies in Honiara are reviewing Taiwan relations ahead of a possible cabinet decision on the issue.

Ms Ebert-Gray, who is also ambassador to Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu, told Taiwan’s Central News Agency the country has been “an exceptional partner”.

“From our perspective, you have been a really good partner for the Solomon Islands and other countries too,” Ms Ebert-Gray said.

“The US embraces that, and we are always willing to support Taiwan’s activities around the world.”
