Indonesians head to the polls today

JAKARTA, Apr 17, 2019, Bernama. Indonesians head to the polls today to pick the president of the world’s third largest country that practices democracy. More than 192 million Indonesians or 192,828,520 people are eligible to choose the country’s president for the 2019-2024 term, reported the Bernama.

More than 780,000 polling stations at schools, government buildings and other premises designated by the Indonesian General Election Commission were open since 7 am across the republic and will close at 1 am.
Canopies are also erected at recreation parks to serve as polling stations.

The 2019 Indonesian General Election is the first to witness the republic holding presidential, parliamentary and local elections on the same day.

A total of 711 seats are at stake in Indonesia’s two-house People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), namely 575 seats in the People’s Representative Council (DPR) and 136 seats in the Regional Representative Council (DPD).

Also open for contention are more than 19,500 seats in over 2,000 regional, municipal and regency legislative council electoral districts.

The focus is certainly on the presidential election with incumbent Indonesian President Joko Widodo (known as Jokowi), running for re-election with one of the most influential Muslim figures in Indonesia, Ma’ruf Amin, as his running mate, against former army general Prabowo Subianto, and former Jakarta deputy governor Sandiaga Uno, for the five-year term.

Jokowi, 57, is scheduled to cast his ballot at TPS 008 in Jalan Veteran Raya, Central Jakarta, while Ma’ruf, 76, at TPS 051, Jalan Deli Lorong 27, Koja, North Jakarta.

Prabowo, 57, is scheduled to vote at TPS 041, Kp. Curug 02/09, Desa Bojong Koneng, Babakan Madang in Bogor, while Sandiaga, 49, at TPS 002 Jalan Sriwijaya 2 Belakang SMK 15 Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
