YANGON, Apr 7, 2019, Myanmar Times. Indonesia’s ministry of tourism announced that it is expecting to receive 40,000 travellers from Myanmar this year, reported the Myanmar Times.

The figure was revealed during a travel industry event in a hotel in Yangon on Wednesday.

The event saw travel entrepreneurs from both countries discussing methods to boost leisure travel between Myanmar and Indonesia.

More than 28,570 travellers from Myanmar visited Indonesia last year, and the number is only expected to rise, said industry insiders at the event.

So, it is expected that the biggest country in ASEAN will get more travellers from Myanmar this year also.

“At present, there are no direct flights between the two countries so it costs more for tourists to travel between Myanmar and Indonesia. It would be more convenient for selling our tour packages if there were direct flights,” said a tour manager from local travel agency Apex Alliance.

During the event, it was also announced that Indonesia will soon be opening the New Yogyakarta International Airport in Java. The new airport is expected to serve as a hub for direct flights from Yangon.

Bali, off the southeast tip of Java, continues to be a popular destination for travellers from Myanmar.
