NEW DELHI, Dec 19, 2019, India Today. Authorities in Delhi swung into action on Thursday morning to contain the fallout of an amended citizenship act passed by parliament, following violent protests in recent days, India Today reported.

Commuters heading to work faced traffic snarls: a huge jam on the Delhi-Gurugram highway and as many as 17 closed Delhi Metro stations on the Yellow, Blue, Violet and Magenta lines. (Scroll down for a full list.)

A top executive at Vistara, an airline based in Gurugram, warned passengers of a “tough travel day” due to a jam created by police barricades and low visibility on a foggy morning.

The Gurugram Police later said the Delhi-Gurugram border had been sealed.

Meanwhile, a Delhi Police official said Section 144 (prohibiting the assembly of more than four people) has been imposed in the North East disrict and around the historic Red Fort in Old Delhi, from where protesters had planned to march to ITO. (The police said permission hadn’t been given for the march.)

It was later imposed at Mandi House.

Activist-politician Yogendra Yadav, former student leader Umar Khalid and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit have all been detained.

Protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act spread to campuses nationwide after alleged police brutalities against students at Jamia Millia Islamia, a Delhi varsity, this weekend.

NOTE: The seventeen metro stations that have been closed are Central Secretariat (interchange available), Patel Chowk, Lok Kalyan Marg, Udyog Bhawan, Chandni Chowk, Vishwavidyalaya, Pragati Maidan, Mandi House (interchange available), Barakhamba Road, ITO, Khan Market, Lal Quila, Jama Masjid, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh, Vasant Vihar and Munirka.
