LIMA, Dec 24, 2019, ANDINA. Peru’s Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Jorge Montenegro on Monday took stock of his first months in office and assessed the actions undertaken by his administration with the aim of working more closely with small-scale farmers, ANDINA reported.

In statements to El Peruano official gazette, Montenegro affirmed that estimates show an upward trend in the coming years, as shipments are expected to reach US$7.5 billion this year, US$8 billion in 2020, and US$10 billion during the Independence Bicentennial.

“This year the primary focus has been placed on working with smallholders. To that end, we promoted the United Nations Decade of Family Farming, a joint effort between the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO),” he said.

Under this concept, the sector —together with other 12 ministries— assigned S/1.7 billion (about US$511 million) to the development of close working relationships in order to promote activities in favor of small farmers.

“With that in mind, our aim is to strengthen family farming, since 97% of the more than 2 million farmers in Peru work in this field,” he expressed.

According to the Cabinet member, Minagri has been working on four main axes: land titling, water-related works, climate change adaptation, and sanitation.

Minister Montenegro reported that Peru recorded US$7 billion in agro-export revenues last year, while more than US$7.5 billion of revenues are expected this year, which will hit a record high.
