Peru President presents South America’s largest lake Titicaca wastewater treatment project

PUNO, Nov 17, 2019, ANDINA. Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday presented the Wastewater Treatment System Project for Lake Titicaca Basin (PTAR Titicaca) in the southern city of Puno, ANDINA reported.
“The decontamination of Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, was a historical aspiration. Today, we take a fundamental step to achieve this with the delivery of the contract for the construction of 10 wastewater treatment plants,” the President expressed.
The execution of this project will enable the decontamination of Lake Titicaca and benefit 1.2 million inhabitants of Puno, as it will reduce waterborne diseases and prevent the proliferation of insects.

The event saw the participation of Ministers Rodolfo Yañez (Housing, Construction and Sanitation) and Maria Antonieta Alva (Economy and Finance).
It was also attended by Puno Governor Agustin Luque and the mayors of the 10 provinces linked to the project.
Lake Titicaca is 3,812 meters above sea level, thus making it the highest navigable body of water in the globe and South America’s largest lake.
