84% of Peru’s citizens support President’s decision to dissolve Congress

LIMA, Oct 7, 2019, ANDINA. A poll found that 84% of Peruvians support President Vizcarra’s decision to dissolve Congress, 8% are against it, 6% are not familiar with the topic, and 2% do not know or have no opinion on the matter, reported the ANDINA.

According to the national urban-rural survey, carried out by the Peruvian Studies Institute (IEP), 75% of respondents back the decision to call for parliamentary elections on January 26, 2020, while 11% disagree with it, 13% are not familiar with the topic, and 1% do not know or have no opinion on the matter.

On the other hand, 70% of those surveyed say President Vizcarra’s decision to decree the dissolution of Parliament was in accordance with the Constitution, whereas 22% of them believe it was a coup d’etat.

Additionally, 66% of the population expressed disagreement with the Congress’ decision to suspend the President of the Republic after its dissolution, while 12% said they agree with it, 20% are not familiar with the topic, and 2% have no opinion on the matter.

The poll revealed that 76% of Peruvians recognize Martin Vizcarra as the Constitutional President of Peru, 20% of respondents said ‘no one,’ and 4% have no opinion on the matter.

Furthermore, 76% of the citizens described President Vizcarra as a democrat, 14% consider him a dictator, and 10% have no opinion on the matter.

The study also showed that the President’s approval rating increased 35 percentage points from 40% to 75% between September and October. In line with this, the disapproval rating dropped from 52% to 18%, whereas 7% of respondents have no opinion on the matter.
