LIMA, May 28, 2019, ANDINA. Presidents Martin Vizcarra (Peru) and Ivan Duque (Colombia) have highlighted the excellent state of bilateral relations, based on shared principles such as democracy, rule of law, respect for human rights, as well as the political and economic affinity uniting both countries, reported the ANDINA.
Within the framework of Duque’s State visit to the Inca country, the two Heads of State signed a joint declaration in which they reaffirmed their commitment to continuing to promote those principles, so the population can achieve development.
Likewise, Duque and Vizcarra reaffirmed Colombia’s and Peru’s commitment to the frontal fight against corruption aimed at safeguarding democratic institutionalism.
In this sense, this promise will be materialized during the joint call to hold a period of extraordinary sessions at the United Nations’ General Assembly in the first half of 2021, with the purpose of adopting concrete actions to prevent and fight corruption, as well as to strengthen international cooperation on this matter.
Earlier, both Presidents held a meeting in order to assess bilateral relations and common goals towards the future.
It should be noted the two countries are allies in diverse regional integration mechanisms such as the Andean Community and the Pacific Alliance.
Concerning Venezuela’s political, economic, social, and humanitarian crisis, Presidents Vizcarra and Duque underlined their governments’ shared stances and ratified their full support for Interim President Juan Guaido.
Furthermore, the two Heads of State urged the international community to increase cooperation with the countries welcoming Venezuelan migrants, so they can attend to the massive exodus of the Bolivarian nation’s citizens.
Finally, they reaffirmed their commitment to continuing to strengthen presidential meetings and Binational Cabinets.
Thus, President Vizcarra invited his Colombian counterpart to the Presidential Meeting and 5th Binational Cabinet set to take place in Peru on August 27.
The gathering took place at the Government Palace in Lima on Monday.
